Description

On the slopes of Mondul Mountain in northern Tanzania, about 25 kilometers from Burka town, a coffee estate has been at work since 1931. The volcanic ground near Mount Meru and the cool highland air give this cup its brightness. Few estates in the country carry this kind of history.

Mondul Coffee Estate, Since 1931

Mondul Coffee Estate sits in the Arusha region of northern Tanzania, where the mineral-rich volcanic soils of the Mount Meru area feed coffee trees that have grown here for generations. The estate spans roughly 211 hectares and employs around 200 permanent staff alongside seasonal pickers during harvest, with permanent workers given housing and wages set above the government minimum. This is shade-grown coffee shaped by patient stewardship rather than shortcuts.

The estate's trees grow between 1,600 and 1,800 meters, the cool, high-altitude band where cherries ripen slowly and develop the dense sugars that translate into a brighter, sweeter cup. Coffee from Tanzania's northern slopes near Arusha is known for exactly this profile: lively acidity, clean sweetness, and aromatic complexity. You can read more about why elevation matters on our high altitude coffee page.

The Craft

Fully Washed, AA Grade

This lot carries Tanzania's top grade designation, AA, which marks the largest, most uniform screen-size beans the country produces. After hand-picking only ripe cherries, the estate pulps them within hours, ferments the parchment for 24 to 36 hours with a mid-stage wash, then dries the coffee slowly over roughly three weeks. That careful, traditional washed routine is what produces the clean, transparent cup the region is known for. Learn how this method shapes flavor on our natural and washed processing methods page.

We roast this Tanzanian to City+, a medium-light level that keeps the coffee's citrus brightness and floral lift front and center while building just enough body to round the finish. Solar-roasted in small batches, the profile is tuned to let Mondul's terroir speak rather than bury it under roast.

Grapefruit Tangerine Floral Brown Sugar BodyMedium AcidityBright The Cup

A Bright Start to the Morning

The first sip opens with citrus, grapefruit and tangerine, wrapped in a soft floral aroma. Sweetness builds through the middle, leaning toward brown sugar, while the acidity stays crisp and clean rather than sharp. As the cup cools, the floral notes deepen and the finish turns smooth and balanced. It is a lively, refreshing coffee, the kind that wakes you up without ever feeling heavy.

Find Your Fix

This Tanzanian shines in a pour-over. A Chemex or V60 highlights the citrus and floral clarity, while a Beehouse or drip gives you a rounder, everyday cup. Aeropress pulls out concentrated sweetness, and it makes a vivid cold brew. Browse the full lineup of coffee beans and find your fix.
