Description
On the forested rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, roughly 150 kilometers north of Arusha city, coffee grows in soil built from one of Africa's great volcanic calderas. This is Karatu Estate, where deep mineral earth and cool highland air shape a Tanzanian cup of real structure.

Tanzania ranks among Africa's most respected Arabica origins, and its northern estates sit on some of the continent's most dramatic terroir. Karatu Estate occupies the ring of land around the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world. The estate was established in the mid-1900s by German settlers after the Second World War, and it has worked this volcanic ground ever since. Dark mineral soil, bimodal rainfall, and daytime temperatures that swing from cool to warm give the farm an unusually balanced growing environment.
At 1,700 to 1,800 meters, the cherries ripen slowly through a single long annual cycle, with harvest running from August through January. The estate plants mostly N39, a Tanzanian Bourbon selection that accounts for the great majority of its trees, alongside the Kent variety long favored in East Africa. Pickers move through the rows by hand, selecting only red and ripe cherries for the mill.
The CraftWashed in the Volcanic Highlands
Karatu Estate runs both dry and wet processing, and this lot is fully washed. After harvest, the ripe cherries are pulped to remove the outer fruit, then fermented to break down the sticky mucilage clinging to each bean. A thorough wash follows, and the parchment dries gently under the highland sun. The result is a clean, transparent cup that lets the variety and the volcanic terroir speak clearly. If you want to understand how this differs from the estate's sun-dried natural lots, our guide to washed and natural processing walks through both paths.
We roast this Tanzanian to City+, a medium-light level that protects the coffee's blackberry and red-currant character while building enough sweetness to round out the cup. Small-batch roasting in Virginia Beach lets us track each lot closely and stop the roast where the fruit and chocolate notes hold in balance.

The first sip leads with dark berry fruit, blackberry up front and a tart edge of red currant just behind it. As the cup cools, those bright notes settle into dark chocolate and a brown-sugar sweetness, carried on a medium-full body with real weight. The acidity stays lively without turning sharp, and the finish lingers clean and cocoa-rich. This is a Tanzanian that rewards attention from the first pour to the last.
Find Your FixThe structure here suits a range of methods. A pour-over through a Chemex or V60 sharpens the berry acidity and keeps the cup transparent, while Drip and Aeropress play up the chocolate depth and fuller body. It also holds its own as Espresso, where the brown-sugar sweetness comes forward. Browse the full lineup of coffee beans and find your fix.
