Description

Doi Inthanon is the tallest peak in Thailand, rising above the forests of Chiang Mai province. On its slopes, a small group of Karen farmers grow coffee that is reshaping what people expect from a country long known for robusta.

Karen Farmers in the Northern Highlands

Coffee here grows in the Lanna highlands of northern Thailand, in remote villages scattered around Doi Inthanon. The producers are members of the Karen tribe, a community that has tended these hillsides for generations. Around twenty smallholders contribute to lots like this one, each working a few acres of forest-shaded trees rather than open plantation rows.

At 1,600 meters, the cool nights and steady mountain mist slow the cherries as they ripen, concentrating sugars and building the kind of clarity that defines the cup. The work of growing at this altitude is demanding, and it shows in the bean. Since 2018, Lanna Coffee Co. has helped these villages build the milling infrastructure and market access that smallholder Thai coffee has historically lacked.

The Craft

Washed in the Village, Roasted to City+

This lot is washed, a method that strips the cherry fruit from the seed before fermentation and drying, leaving a clean, transparent profile. Some of the village's pulping is still done by hand using traditional tools, a manual care that few origins still practice at scale. If you want to understand how washed and natural processing shape flavor, this cup is a clear study in the washed style.

We roast to City+, stopping just past first crack so the chocolate weight and gentle spice come forward without flattening the citrus brightness underneath. It is a balance built to honor what the farmers and the mountain put into the bean.

Chocolate, Spice, and a Citric Lift

The first sip leads with cocoa and a warm baking-spice note, full enough to satisfy without turning heavy. As the cup cools, a citric sweetness rises through the middle, brightening the finish and pulling everything into balance. It is a comforting, approachable coffee with enough complexity to reward a second pour.

Find Your Fix

This one shines through a Drip brewer or V60, where the clean washed body and citrus lift stay distinct. A Chemex stretches the brightness even further, while Aeropress pulls the chocolate forward for a richer cup. Browse the rest of our coffee beans and find your fix.
