Description

At the southern tip of Laos, a basalt tableland rises above the Mekong lowlands and catches the monsoon. This is the Bolaven Plateau, where nearly all of the country's coffee grows, and where smallholder families still tend Typica trees descended from the first Arabica planted here a century ago.

The Bolaven Plateau

The Bolaven Plateau is volcanic country. Basalt eruptions millions of years ago left behind deep red soil rich in minerals, and the plateau's elevation keeps days cool and nights cooler. Roughly 95 percent of all Lao coffee comes from this corner of Champasak Province, grown by smallholder families across villages like Nonglouang, Lassasin, and Xenamnoi. Plots are small, hand-tended, and rooted in soil that does much of the work. To understand why that altitude matters, consider that cooler temperatures slow cherry maturation, concentrating sugars and building cleaner sweetness.

This lot is 100 percent Typica, one of the oldest cultivated Arabica varieties and the same stock French planters introduced to Laos in the 1920s. Typica is prized for its clean, approachable sweetness rather than dramatic intensity. Laos remains a smaller origin than its neighbor Vietnam, and each harvest carries real weight for the communities that depend on it, funding schools, local infrastructure, and the patient work of building Laos into an origin worth watching.

The Craft

Washed and Sorted for Clarity

This coffee is fully washed. After picking, the cherries are pulped, fermented to loosen the fruit, then rinsed clean before drying under the plateau's tropical skies. The microclimate helps here, moderating the heat of the day and spacing out the rains so drying stays even. The washed approach strips away the fruit early, which is exactly why the cup reads so clean and structured. For a closer look at how that compares to other methods, see our guide to washed and natural processing.

The beans are sorted to a large, uniform screen size, which helps them roast evenly. We take this lot to a City+ roast at our Virginia Beach roastery, a medium level that draws out caramelized sugar and nutty depth without burying Typica's natural softness. The goal is balance: enough development to round the cup, never so much that the variety's gentle character disappears.

Comforting and Quietly Distinct

This is an easy coffee to live with. The first sip leads with roasted caramel and toasted-nut sweetness, then settles into cool burnt sugar and a soft, semi-roasty cocoa note in the finish. The acidity stays gentle, so nothing sharpens or competes, while a medium body gives the cup just enough structure to hold together from start to last sip.

It tastes familiar enough to feel like home and different enough to make you pause. That is the quiet appeal of Lao Typica: clean, sweet, and unhurried.

Find Your Fix

This roast shines through pourover and drip. A V60 or Beehouse at a 1:16 ratio with water near 200°F pulls the caramelized sugar forward, while a flat-bottom drip brewer rounds the sweetness for an everyday cup. Aeropress works well too if you want it quick and concentrated. Explore the full lineup of coffee beans and find your fix.
