Description
In the hills of Menglian, near where Yunnan Province meets the Myanmar border, small citrus trees dot the slopes between coffee rows. Locals call those fruits juzi, the Chinese word for tangerine, and they gave this coffee its name. The cup carries a thread of that same bright fruit.

China is known the world over for tea, yet a quiet coffee story has been growing in its far southwest. Yunnan Province grows the overwhelming majority of the country's coffee, and even so China accounts for only about one percent of global supply. Menglian sits at the heart of this young origin, a mountainous county where more than twenty ethnic groups farm side by side, the Dai community prominent among them.
The growing slopes here climb to between 1,400 and 1,600 meters. At these higher elevations, wide swings between warm days and cool nights slow the cherries as they ripen, giving the seeds more time to build sugars and the aromatic compounds that show up later in the cup. For the farming families who tend these plots, specialty coffee has become a way to diversify income beyond tea and add new value to the same fertile hillsides.
The CraftWashed for Clarity
This lot is a Catimor, a hardy hybrid of Caturra and the disease-resistant Timor type that has become the backbone of Yunnan farming. After picking, the cherries are depulped and the seeds fermented to loosen their sticky mucilage, then washed clean before drying. This washed processing strips away the fruit early, which keeps the cup transparent and lets the bean's own structure lead.
We roast these seeds to City+ at our Virginia Beach roastery, a level chosen to hold the citrus lift while coaxing out brown sugar and a gentle nuttiness. Roasted in small batches under the sun, each profile is dialed to keep Menglian's clean, balanced character intact.

The first sip opens with a flash of orange zest, the citrus brightness that earned this coffee its name. As it cools, brown sugar sweetness settles in alongside soft chocolate and a toasted, nutty finish. A faint note of spice rounds out the close. It drinks clean and balanced, approachable enough for everyday brewing yet distinct enough to reward a slow morning.
