Description

In the volcanic highlands north of Nairobi, Kenya's central counties grow some of the most distinctive coffee on the continent. This decaf draws on those same regions, then loses its caffeine to water alone. Bright Kenyan character, no jitters.

Kenya's Central Counties

Kenya earns its reputation in counties like Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, and Murang'a, where rich volcanic soil and cool nights at altitude slow cherry development and concentrate flavor. The coffee here is built on two varieties selected by Scott Laboratories in the 1930s, SL28 and SL34, prized for their clarity and structure.

The lots in this decaf carry the AA and AB grades, terms that describe bean size rather than cup quality. Both grades come from the same well-tended smallholder plots, and growing at high altitude, between 1,500 and 2,100 meters, is what gives Kenyan coffee its signature brightness and density.

The Craft

Decaffeinated With Water Alone

The green coffee is fully washed at origin, fermented and rinsed to strip the fruit before drying, the method that produces Kenya's clean acidity. To learn how that compares with other approaches, see our guide to washed and natural processing. From there the beans travel to the Swiss Water plant in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Swiss Water uses no chemical solvents. The beans soak in a water-based extract already saturated with coffee's flavor compounds, so caffeine migrates out while aroma and taste stay behind. The result removes 99.9 percent of the caffeine. We then roast it to City+, a medium-light profile that keeps the cup expressive rather than flattening it.

Chocolate Caramel Citrus Black Currant BodyFull AcidityBright The Cup

Kenyan Brightness, Decaffeinated

The cup opens with cocoa and soft caramel, then lifts into bright citrus and a hint of black currant, the kind of acidity Kenyan coffee is known for. The body stays full and round, so the brightness has weight to ride on rather than turning thin.

This is decaf that tastes like Kenya first and decaf second. A clean, layered finish makes it an easy evening cup or an all-day pour for anyone cutting back on caffeine.

Find Your Fix

The full body and bright acidity shine through pour-over methods like the V60, Chemex, or Beehouse, and it holds up just as well through standard drip. Aeropress tightens the cup for a concentrated single serving. Browse our full lineup of coffee beans and find your fix.
