Description

On the western slopes of Hawaii's Big Island, the Kona coffee belt runs narrow and steep, a thirty-mile ribbon of volcanic ground between Hualalai and Mauna Loa. High within it sits Kopiko Estate, part of Greenwell Farms, where ocean mornings and cloud-shaded afternoons set the rhythm of every harvest.

A Family Name on the Map of Kona

Coffee reached Hawaii in 1828, but it was Henry Nicholas Greenwell, who left England and settled in rural Kona in 1850, who helped fix the region in the world's imagination. The farm that carries his name still works the prime coffee belt today, growing its own crop while supporting hundreds of smaller Kona growers who deliver cherry to the mill each season.

Kopiko Estate is the newer ground in that legacy, once cattle and sugar land, now planted entirely to Kona coffee and run as a model farm for the surrounding community. At 2,600 to 2,800 feet, the trees sit higher than much of the belt, where cooler air and brighter morning sun stretch out cherry maturation and concentrate sweetness in the bean. Nitrate-rich basaltic soil and steady afternoon cloud cover do the rest.

The Craft

Washed, Sun-Dried, Roasted to City+

Kona's signature clarity comes from the wet mill. Cherries are hand-picked at peak ripeness, depulped, and fermented to lift the fruit from the seed before a thorough wash. The beans then dry under Hawaiian sun until they hold steady, a washed process that protects the bean's delicate structure and lets origin character, not fruit ferment, lead the cup.

We roast Kopiko Estate to City+, a medium-light profile that respects what the farm sent us. The level brings out caramelized sweetness and a clean, layered acidity without pushing the bean toward roast-driven flavor. Typica, the variety that has defined Kona since the 1890s, rewards this restraint with a balanced, structured cup.

Honey Sweetness, Citrus Lift, Nutty Close

The cup opens with golden brown sugar and a buttery roundness, then a crisp Meyer lemon acidity cuts through and keeps everything bright. Underneath runs a smooth thread of toasted macadamia that builds as the coffee cools.

The finish is clean and lingering, gentle and even from first sip to last. This is a balanced, approachable Kona, the kind that explains why the region earns its reputation without ever shouting about it.

Find Your Fix

Kopiko Estate is built for clarity, so reach for a pour-over. A V60, Chemex, or Beehouse highlights the citrus and honey notes, while a classic drip batch keeps the nutty body front and center. Aeropress works well for a fuller cup. Browse our other coffee beans and find your fix.
