Description

On the southern shoulders of Mount Kenya, in the Mukurweini hills of Nyeri County, smallholder farmers deliver ripe cherry to the Mutwewathi factory. This washed lot carries the blackcurrant intensity that made Kenyan coffee famous, grown in red volcanic soil that few other origins can match.

Nyeri County, the heart of Kenyan coffee

Nyeri sits in central Kenya on the fertile slopes that drain off Mount Kenya, and its name carries weight at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange. The region's deep red volcanic soil is rich in phosphorus, and that mineral content shows up in the cup as the sparkling, almost wine-like acidity Kenyan coffee is known for worldwide. Cool nights at this high altitude slow cherry maturation, giving the beans time to build sugar and concentrate flavor.

The Mutwewathi factory serves roughly 750 smallholder members of the New Gikaru Farmers Cooperative Society, most tending plots smaller than five acres. They grow SL28 and SL34, two cultivars Scott Laboratories selected decades ago for cup quality rather than yield. Farmers hand-pick selectively, returning to the same trees again and again across the season to gather only fully ripe cherry. That patience, repeated across hundreds of small farms, is what gives a Nyeri lot its consistency.

The Craft

Classic Kenyan washed processing

Cherry reaches the factory within hours of picking. Workers pulp the fruit to free the parchment coffee, then ferment it in concrete tanks for roughly 12 to 16 hours to break down the sticky mucilage. The beans are washed clean in channels of fresh mountain water, then moved to raised beds where they dry slowly under the sun. This washed method strips away the fruit early, leaving a transparent cup that puts the bean's own character on full display.

We roast this lot to City+, a level that protects the delicate fruit acids instead of burying them under roast. The result keeps the blackcurrant snap and citrus lift intact while developing just enough sweetness to round the edges. Clean processing and a careful roast are the two halves of a coffee like this, and Nyeri gives us the raw material to get both right.

Blackcurrant Lime Blueberry Raw Sugar BodyMedium AcidityBright The Cup

Textbook Nyeri brightness

Blackcurrant arrives first and unmistakable, the signature note that announces a Kenyan coffee before you read the label. Lime acidity cuts through clean and bright, while blueberry adds a second layer of fruit underneath. Raw sugar sweetness ties it together without leaning on caramel or roast.

The medium body gives the cup enough weight to feel substantial while staying transparent, so the SL28 and SL34 character reads clearly from first sip to last. The AA grade marks the largest screen size in Kenya's sorting system, the beans buyers chase at auction. This is Nyeri doing what Nyeri does best.

Find Your Fix

This lot shines in pour-over. A Chemex or V60 at a 1:16 ratio with water just off the boil pulls out the clarity and the bright fruit. Pulled as espresso it makes fruit-forward shots that hold up in a cappuccino, and the acidity translates beautifully to cold brew. Explore the rest of our coffee beans and find your fix.
