Description
On the leeward flank of Hualalai, the western Big Island catches morning sun and afternoon cloud cover in a daily rhythm that coffee trees have learned to love. Arianna Farms works these slopes above Kona Bay, and the cherry that comes off them is the genuine article: 100 percent Kona, no blending, no shortcuts.

The Kona growing region is a thin ribbon of farmland running roughly 20 miles along the western coast of Hawaii's Big Island, draped over the volcanic slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa. It is one of the few places in the United States where coffee grows commercially, and its reputation rests on a rare combination of factors: rich volcanic soil, bright tropical sun, and a reliable blanket of afternoon clouds that shade the trees during the hottest hours. Arianna Farms sits within this belt, overlooking Kona Bay, where the elevation and the daily weather cycle slow the cherry's maturation and concentrate its sweetness.
Most authentic Kona is grown from the Kona Typica variety, a lineage that traces back to coffee first planted on the islands in the 1800s. The combination of high terrain and volcanic mineral content gives the region its signature clarity in the cup. To understand why the slope itself matters so much, it helps to look at how altitude shapes a coffee's character: cooler temperatures higher up draw out a denser, more flavorful bean.
The CraftWashed, Sun-Dried, Hand-Sorted
At the farm, the ripe cherry is handpicked and wet-milled in small batches, then laid out to dry on raised beds where air circulates freely on every side. This washed approach, where the fruit is removed before drying, is the classic Kona method and the reason the cup reads so clean and transparent. If you want to see how this differs from leaving the fruit on the bean, our guide to natural and washed processing methods breaks down what each style does to the flavor.
Once the green coffee reaches Virginia Beach, we roast it in small batches and hand-sort the result, pulling any beans that do not measure up. These are notably large, dense seeds, and we take them to a City+ level: enough development to round out the chocolate sweetness without scorching the delicate citrus that makes Kona worth the trip. The goal is to let the origin speak for itself.
Milk Chocolate Lemon Brown Sugar Toasted Almond BodyMedium AcidityBright, Soft The CupSmooth and Sunlit
This is a gentle, welcoming cup with none of the sharp edges some bright coffees carry. Milk chocolate leads, smooth and rounded, while a clean lemon brightness lifts the finish and keeps things lively. Underneath sits a quiet sweetness, somewhere between brown sugar and toasted nuts, that lingers comfortably.
The body is medium and silky rather than heavy, which lets the flavors stay clear and distinct from first sip to last. It is the kind of coffee that rewards slow mornings. Close your eyes and the trade winds are not far off.
Find Your FixA clean washed Kona shines through a Chemex or V60, where the paper filter keeps the cup bright and the citrus crisp. A Beehouse or standard drip will give you a rounder, more chocolate-forward result, and Aeropress works well if you want a single concentrated cup.
