Only coffee grown in Jamaica's Blue Mountains between 910 and 1,700 meters can bear this name. The designation is protected as a registered Geographical Indication, much like Champagne from France or Parmigiano-Reggiano from Italy. Every lot is certified before export by Jamaica's coffee regulator, historically the Coffee Industry Board and today the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority.
This lot comes from the Wallenford Estate, one of the island's oldest and most renowned coffee operations, with land spanning the parishes of Portland and Saint Andrew. Generations of farmers have worked these steep hillsides, carrying on traditional methods refined over centuries.
The Blue Mountains' unique terroir creates ideal growing conditions: morning mists and afternoon cloud cover moderate temperatures, mineral-rich soil feeds the plants, and abundant rainfall nourishes the slow-maturing cherries. At these high elevations, cooler temperatures extend the growing season well beyond the typical timeline, the patience behind this coffee's legendary complexity.
The CraftWashed: Clarity Above All
This coffee is fully washed, the method that defines Jamaica Blue Mountain's character. On steep terrain where machinery cannot reach, every cherry is hand-picked at peak ripeness by skilled harvesters. This hands-on approach means only perfectly ripe, red cherries are selected, the first step in ensuring quality.
After harvest, cherries go to the pulpery where the fruit is mechanically removed. The beans then ferment in water tanks for 24 to 48 hours to break down the remaining mucilage. This meticulous wet processing reveals the bean's inherent qualities: clean sweetness, balanced acidity, and a transparent expression of terroir.
After washing, beans are sun-dried on patios and turned regularly for even drying, then rested to let their flavors develop and stabilize. Jamaica Blue Mountain is also one of the few coffees in the world still exported in traditional wooden barrels rather than jute sacks, a testament to its heritage and the care taken to preserve freshness. We roast it gently to City+, protecting the delicate balance that makes this origin famous.

What sets Blue Mountain apart is not intensity but integration. Silky milk chocolate meets toasted almond, lifted by a whisper of jasmine and grounded by brown sugar. The acidity is bright but never sharp. The finish is clean and remarkably long. This is the coffee that defined "smooth."
Notably, this coffee is low in bitterness; its character remains clean and mellow even as the cup cools. Look for new dimensions to emerge as the temperature drops: subtle citrus on the finish, deeper chocolate notes, a honey-like sweetness that was not apparent in the first sip. This is a coffee that rewards patience.
The ContextRarity & Impact
Jamaica produces roughly a tenth of a percent of the world's coffee, a tiny fraction compared to giants like Brazil or Vietnam. Yet this small output commands outsized respect. The scarcity and exceptional quality mean Jamaica Blue Mountain consistently ranks among the most expensive coffees on the specialty market.
Japan has long held a particular affection for this coffee: more than 80% of Jamaica's annual production is exported there, where it is considered a national favorite. The remaining supply is sought after by coffee lovers across the United States and Europe.
The Blue Mountain coffee industry supports thousands of farmers across the region, many of them smallholders whose families have grown coffee for generations. From farm labor to mill workers to the coopers who craft the traditional export barrels, this coffee sustains rural communities throughout Jamaica's eastern parishes.
Find Your FixHonor this coffee with precision. Pour-over on a V60 or Chemex at a 1:16 ratio with 202°F water reveals its clarity. For fuller body, try Aeropress with a slightly coarser grind. Keep the brew gentle; this coffee speaks softly but carries profound depth, so let it. Browse the rest of our coffee beans and find your fix.
