Description
In Uganda's far northwest, where the clay-colored waters of the White Nile cut toward Lake Albert, the Zombo district grows something the country is rarely known for. This is Arabica, not the Robusta that fills most Ugandan export bags, and it carries the bright clarity of the high Alur Highlands.

Uganda ranks among Africa's largest coffee exporters, but the trade leans heavily on Robusta. Arabica is the quieter story, grown in pockets of high ground where the climate favors slow cherry maturation. Zombo sits on the Alur Highlands of the West Nile sub-region, and the farms here climb from 1,450 to 1,800 meters. That altitude is what gives this coffee its structure, letting the cherries develop sugars and a defined acidity that lower-elevation growing cannot match.
The coffee carries the name of the river that defines the region. Since 1998, the White Nile Organic Coffee Project has linked the exporter Kawacom with more than 8,000 smallholder farmers across these hills. The project funds agronomic training, organic certification, and centralized milling, and that investment shows in the cup: cupping scores have climbed steadily as farmers moved from backyard processing to a managed system. Varieties grown here include SL14 and SL28, Kenyan selections prized for drought tolerance, alongside the older Blue Mountain.
The CraftWashed at the White Nile Wet Mill
Cherries are delivered to Kawacom's central wet mill, where careful sorting keeps underripe and damaged fruit out of the lot. This is a washed coffee, though the mill uses a measured approach: the parchment is partially dried while still carrying some mucilage before the final wash, then moved to raised beds to finish slowly in open air. Comparing the clean, transparent character of washed lots against fruit-forward naturals is the heart of coffee processing, and this method lands on the side of clarity and balance.
We roast this coffee to City+, a medium-light level that keeps the origin character intact while rounding out the body. The aim is to let Zombo's natural sweetness and mild acidity carry the cup rather than burying them under roast. Each small batch is solar-roasted at our Virginia Beach roastery.
White Grape Dark Chocolate Pear Brown Sugar BodyMedium-Full AcidityMild The CupSmooth and Quietly Sweet
The cup opens with white grape and pear, a soft fruit sweetness that sets the tone. Underneath sits dark chocolate, which gives the coffee its weight and a rounded, medium-full body. Brown sugar carries the finish, and the acidity stays mild throughout, so the whole experience reads as smooth and balanced rather than sharp.
This is an easygoing cup that rewards an everyday pour, with enough depth to stay interesting from the first sip to the last.
Find Your FixThe medium-full body and gentle acidity make this a natural fit for Drip and pour-over methods like the V60, Chemex, or Beehouse, all of which highlight the white grape and brown sugar sweetness.
