Murang'a County sits southwest of Mount Kenya on the western slopes of the Aberdare Range, a region with deep coffee heritage. The Kahuhia farmers cooperative society formed in 1959, making it one of Kenya's established farmer organizations, with thousands of members spread across the surrounding hills and several wet mills serving the community.
Member farms sit between 1,600 and 1,850 meters, where the producers cultivate SL28 and SL34 in fertile red volcanic soil. These high-altitude slopes receive reliable rainfall and significant day-night temperature swings, which slow cherry maturation and let sugars develop. Smallholder members typically farm one to three acres each, picking selectively so only ripe cherry reaches the central washing station.
The CraftWashed processing refined over decades
Cherry arrives at Kahuhia's central wet mill within hours of picking, where the operators sort for ripeness and depulp immediately to preserve freshness. Parchment then ferments in clean water tanks for 12 to 48 hours to break down the mucilage, followed by washing in fresh water and slow drying on raised beds.
The cooperative's long experience shows in consistent execution of washed processing fundamentals. Careful fermentation timing, clean water through every stage, and patient bed drying all contribute to the transparency and brightness that define classic Kenyan coffee. We roast this lot to City+, holding back enough to keep the berry character and acidity fully intact.
BlackcurrantRaspberryGrapefruitDark chocolate BodyMedium AcidityBright The CupCooperative consistency meets Kenya intensity
Blackcurrant and raspberry create the berry-forward profile that makes Kenyan coffee instantly recognizable, while grapefruit acidity provides structure and lift. Dark chocolate adds depth and balances the fruit with a quiet roast sweetness. Medium body carries the complexity without weighing it down.
The AA grade designates the largest screen size, 17 to 18, though Kenya evaluates cup quality separately through its rigorous grading system. The result here is a clean, layered cup that reflects why Kahuhia has held its reputation across more than sixty harvests.
Find Your FixPour-over methods showcase the bright, fruit-forward character best. Try V60 or Chemex at a 1:16 ratio with water around 203 to 205 degrees. Espresso pulls berry-forward shots that hold up straight or in a cappuccino, and cold brew draws out the raspberry and chocolate while keeping a pleasant acidity.
