Description

Two of East Africa's great coffee origins, roasted separately and blended in equal parts: Kenya for its structure and blackcurrant punch, Ethiopia for its florals and fruit. Kenopian is a Fathom house favorite, and this special edition gives back to the Lynnhaven River here at home.

Kenya and Ethiopia, equal parts

Kenopian started as a staff favorite and stuck around by popular demand. It pairs two of the most distinctive origins in coffee, both grown at high altitude in the East African highlands. The Kenyan component brings structure: bright, juicy blackcurrant acidity and a savory depth that Kenya is famous for, the legacy of its meticulous washed processing and SL-variety genetics. You can taste that same backbone in coffees like our Kenya Kericho AA.

The Ethiopian component brings lift: jasmine florals and stone-fruit sweetness from naturally processed heirloom coffee. Roasted separately to suit each origin and then blended in equal parts, the two halves cover for each other, structure underneath, perfume on top.

The Craft

Roasted apart, blended after

Kenya and Ethiopia want different things from the roaster, so we roast them separately rather than throwing green coffee of two densities into one drum and hoping. Each is taken to City+ to suit its own sugars and acidity, then the two are combined in equal parts after the roast. It draws on both washed and natural processing to build a cup that is brighter and more layered than either origin alone at this price.

This edition supports Lynnhaven River NOW, the local nonprofit working to restore the Lynnhaven watershed in Virginia Beach. Community connection is part of why Fathom exists, and a coffee that gives back to the water out our back door fits the brand exactly.

Blackcurrant Jasmine Stone Fruit Citrus Body Medium Acidity Bright The Cup

Bright, juicy, and layered

The cup leads with the Kenyan side: blackcurrant and a tart, juicy brightness that wakes the palate up. Jasmine and stone fruit follow from the Ethiopian half, softening the edges and adding a floral, fruity perfume. Citrus threads through the finish, which stays clean and bright. The body is medium, the acidity high and lively. This is a coffee for people who like coffee to taste like something, vivid and complex, but balanced enough that it never tips into sour.

Find Your Fix

An East African blend this bright belongs in clean filter brewing. Pour-over with a V60 or Chemex at roughly a 1:16 ratio shows off the blackcurrant and jasmine with the most clarity, while drip keeps it easy for a full pot. It makes a vivid cold brew and a bright, fruit-forward espresso for the adventurous. Browse the rest of our coffee beans and find your fix.
