Description

Rwanda earned its nickname, the Land of a Thousand Hills, on terrain like this. In the country's far southwest, the Rusizi district folds into steep ridges above the lake that draws the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Mashesha washing station sits in that landscape, drying its cherries slowly in the high-altitude sun.

Rusizi's Thousand Hills

Rwanda's modern coffee story is a recent one. The first washing stations opened in 2001, and the country reinvented itself from a bulk commodity supplier into one of Africa's most respected specialty origins in barely two decades. Roughly 400,000 smallholder families grow the crop, most on plots of a tenth of a hectare or less, tending a few hundred trees each and delivering ripe cherry to a nearby station.

Mashesha gathers cherry from more than a thousand of those farmers across the hills of Rusizi. The washing station sits near 1,125 meters, while contributing farms climb toward 1,800 meters, where cool nights slow the fruit's maturation and concentrate sugars in the bean. That high-altitude ripening, paired with Rwanda's near-universal Bourbon plantings, gives the region its reputation for sweetness and structure. The station operates with Kahawatu Foundation as its sustainability partner, and carries Organic certification.

The Craft

A Slow Natural in Washed Country

Rwanda built its name on washed coffees, so a natural process here is the exception rather than the rule. Whole cherries are floated first to lift out the underripe and damaged fruit, then moved to raised beds where the coffee dries inside its fruit for 18 to 20 days. Workers turn and hand-sort the beds throughout, pulling defects by eye. Drying the bean in contact with its own sugars is what builds the deep, jammy fruit character that sets this lot apart from its washed neighbors. You can read more on how the two methods diverge in our guide to natural and washed processing.

We roast this coffee to City+, a level that protects the dried-fruit sweetness while letting a cocoa-toned base develop underneath. The goal is a cup with weight and depth that never tips into bitterness, true to the bean rather than the roast.

Dried Fruit and Cocoa

The cup opens on rustic dried fruit, with fig and raisin leading and a quiet goji-berry tang underneath. As it cools, the natural process shows its hand: winey berry notes, a tangy chocolate that reads like seventy-percent cacao, and a faint aromatic-wood edge. The body is heavy and syrupy, carrying that fruit through a long, sweet finish.

Pulled as espresso, the same lot turns into a thick shot of dark-chocolate ganache with a blueberry shadow behind it, a natural choice for anyone who reaches for a fuller, fruit-forward cup.

Find Your Fix

This coffee rewards a brewer that respects its body. Espresso is the standout, layering ganache and dark fruit into a dense shot. For filter, a Chemex or V60 keeps the cup clean while preserving its weight, and the heavy mouthfeel makes it a natural for Cold Brew over ice.
