Description

High on the southeastern slopes of Kenya's Aberdare Range, smallholder farmers tend half-acre plots intercropped with bananas and grevillea. Their ripest cherries travel to the Kamoini Factory, a cooperative wet mill perched above the Ichamama River. The result is a Nyeri cup that reads like a textbook example of why Kenyan coffee commands the prices it does.

Nyeri County and the Othaya Cooperative

Nyeri sits in the heart of Kenya's central highlands, where deep red volcanic soil from the Aberdares meets some of the most consistent specialty coffee in East Africa. The Kamoini Factory operates under the Othaya Farmers Cooperative Society, a network of wet mills that organizes hundreds of smallholders into a shared route to market. Around 550 active farmers deliver cherry to Kamoini, most working small plots of roughly 250 trees near their homes.

The cooperative runs a large nursery that keeps the classic Kenyan SL28 and SL34 selections alive alongside the disease-resistant Ruiru 11. That blend of old and new varieties, combined with the factory's position near 1,825 meters along the Ichamama River, gives the lot its density and structure. Higher elevations slow cherry maturation, concentrating the sugars and bright acids that define this region.

The Craft

A Triple Wash, Then City+ Roasting

Kamoini follows a meticulous triple-washed routine. Whole cherries are floated first, separating the ripe and dense fruit from the lighter rejects. After pulping, the coffee moves through a main fermentation stage to break down the fruit mucilage, then finishes with an overnight soak in clean water. This extra clean-water step is a hallmark of washed Kenyan processing and is responsible for the crystalline clarity in the cup.

We roast to City+, a medium-light level that protects the acidity and floral structure rather than burying it under roast character. The goal is to keep grapefruit and lime out front while letting the deeper sweetness develop. Solar-roasted in small batches, each lot is dialed in to honor the work done at the mill.

Citrus, Tea, and a Candied Finish

The cup opens with vibrant grapefruit and lime acidity, the kind of juicy brightness that defines top Nyeri lots. A delicate raisin sweetness rounds the midpalate, while a velvety body carries it toward a refined black-tea finish. As the coffee cools, candied orange and malty milk chocolate emerge, layering complexity onto every sip.

Find Your Fix

This Kenyan shines through clarity-focused methods. A Chemex or V60 pour-over highlights the citrus and tea notes, while a flat-bottom drip brew keeps it approachable for everyday cups. Aeropress concentrates the sweetness for a punchier mug. Explore more from our coffee beans selection and find your fix.
